Swoosie Kurtz was born on September 6, 1944 in Omaha, Nebraska.  The only child of author Margo Rogers and Air Force Colonel Frank Kurtz, her unusual name is derived from “Swoose” – half swan, half goose – which was the name of the B-17D bomber that her father piloted in World War II.

She majored in drama at the University of Southern California, and later attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, collected.  Kurtz first appeared on television as a teenager on The Donna Reed Show.  Since then, she has appeared in many TV shows and movies, received several Golden Globe nominations and earned an Emmy for her guest-starring performance on Carol Burnett‘s comedy series.

In 1981, Kurtz received Broadway’s “triple crown” (the Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards) for her portrayal of Gwen in Lanford Wilson’s “The Fifth of July”.  She also received a Tony for her featured performance in John Guare’s “The House of Blue Leaves.”

Kurtz currently portrays Joyce Flynn on the hit CBS sitcom Mike & Molly.
